“2019 was an outstanding year for red wines. These Provenance reds all show brilliant colour and depth of flavour. I’m really excited to showcase the quality of these premier Queensland reds.” – Jon Heslop, Witches Falls Chief Winemaker.

Provenance Trio

This Tuesday marks the introduction of a third wine into our new Provenance range, with the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon forming what we like to call our ‘Provenance Trio’. In light of this, we can’t think of a better time to delve into the specifics of this exciting new range, and give a bit more background into the switch from ‘Granite Belt’ to ‘Provenance’.

Granite Belt range becomes the Provenance range:

Historically, we have sourced the fruit for all of our wines from the Granite Belt region. Located on Queensland’s southern border, the Granite Belt centres on the town of Stanthorpe. Offering high altitudes and free-draining granite soils, the climate is perfectly suited to grow grapes, and as such has remained our source for fruit since 2003. The release of our 2019 Provenance Syrah, made from Queensland fruit this April signified the beginning of new development upon this tradition.

Why ‘Provenance’?

‘Provenance’, implies a place of origin, or as we see it, the beginning of a new existence. This concept, we decided, perfectly captured the essence of our new range, whilst also reinforcing the importance of regional significance. Here at Witches Falls, we have always championed regional expression, and ‘Provenance’ seeks not to strengthen these ideals through showcasing the quality of Queensland wines.

Why the change?

2019 was a challenging year for the Australian wine industry. Drought affected a significant impact upon harvest volumes, with the Granite Belt region suffering a reduction that saw less than 5 per cent of expected yields make it to harvest. So that we might adequately account for such a significant deficit, we have had to seek additional sources of fruit in other premium wine regions, including greater Queensland and South Australia.

Will there be more varieties?

Yes! Plenty of exciting stuff is on the way. Yesterday was a busy day of bottling the new 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, and we are working towards the release of our 2020 South Australian Vermentino (we happen to be particularly excited for this one!).

2019 Provenance Syrah

The 2018 Granite Belt Syrah was one of our most loved wines and we’re confident the 2019 Provenance is even better! Smooth blackcurrant, counterbalanced with spicy black pepper and deep plum makes for a powerful and opulent palate. This wine is the perfect companion for those splendid Autumn evenings we’re all looking forward to.

2019 Provenance Merlot

The deep garnet hue of this Provenance Merlot will have you hooked from the first swirl, and it only gets better from there! Juicy dark berry aromas pair beautifully with cassis, dark chocolate and black cherry flavours. Grippy tannins dance on a rich, decadent, and full-bodied palate.

2019 Provenance Cabernet Sauvignon

The newest in the Provenance range, our 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is the height of refined elegance. Aromas of ripe plum, cocoa, black tea and toasted spices match perfectly to its soft and velvety tannins. Deep flavours and just a hint of ripe strawberry culminate in a sumptuous and luxurious mouthfeel.
