Tasting notes The savoury nose of this elegant wine shows aromas of strawberries and place cherries while fine tannins carry the mouth-filling palate.
This wine has an amazing pedigree. Our 2009 vintage was described by wine writer and critic Tony Harper
as ’a confidently focused pinot with the structure that I reckon the variety demands and only a tiny percentage
of Australia’s pinot noir’s manage. That structure in my books sets this wine apart from the Australian pack;
sends a shiver up my spine in anticipation of what might come from the Granite Belt in future years and no
doubt justifies Jon Heslop’s time in France.’Viticultural notes The fruit for this Wild Ferment Pinot Noir was grown in the Ballandean district of the Granite Belt. The Granite Belt is situated on the Great Dividing Range 850m above sea level and 95 km inland from the coast. The winters are cold and frosty and summers warm producing a continental climate. Most of the region’s rainfall comes in Spring feeding the growing buds and shoots. The soil is largely composed of granite, somewhat on the acidic side and is very free draining. Winemaking notes The fruit for our Wild Ferment Pinot Noir was hand picked and the bunches de-stemmed and whole berries fermented very traditionally in open fermenters with minimal intervention using indigenous yeast. The juice was then matured in new and seasoned French oak barriques for a period of 10 months. Intentional malo-lactic fermentation took place in barrel.
