2019 Provenance Syrah

$30.00

Blackcurrant and spicy black pepper aromas excite the senses which are rewarded with delicious flavours of dark plum and spice on the powerful and generous palate. Fine tannins and integrated oak further elevate this stylish wine which will reward with careful cellaring.

Granite Belt range becomes the Provenance Range
Our 2019 Queensland Syrah is the first variety to be released in our new Provenance range (previously the Granite Belt range).

Why the change?
This year, the drought has had a devastating impact on Granite Belt fruit production with the harvest being less than 5 per cent of the usual amount. This has meant that we’ve had to look to other premium wine regions (including South Australia) to make up the shortfall.

Why Provenance?
The definition of Provenance is ‘the origin or beginning of something’s existence’, and we felt this perfectly embodied the essence of the new range. Our hand-crafted wines have always embraced regional expression and now more than ever, this will be the case.

    Tasting notes
You say ‘Shiraz’, I say ‘Syrah’ – it’s the same grape, but the wine styles are very different. Blackcurrant and spicy black pepper aromas excite the senses which are rewarded with delicious flavours of dark plum and spice on the powerful and generous palate. Fine tannins and integrated oak further elevate this stylish wine which will reward with careful cellaring.
    Viticultural notes
70% of the fruit for our Provenance Syrah was grown near the township of Ballandean in the Granite Belt which is situated on the Great Dividing Range 850m above sea level and 95 km inland from the coast. The Granite Belt continues to produce Syrah that is refined, elegant and European in its style. The winters are cold and frosty and summers warm producing a continental climate. Most of the region’s rainfall comes in the growing season feeding the buds and shoots. The soil is largely composed of granite, somewhat on the acidic side and is very free draining. The Syrah fruit was harvested at the end of March after a long slow ripening period producing full flavoured fruit.
    Winemaking notes
The wine has been 100% barrel fermented in a mixture of American and Hungarian oak.
