Petit Verdot: A Bold New Chapter in Australian Red Wine
Discover Petit Verdot: The Provenance Collection's Hidden Gem
Curious about the bold, vibrant red in our Provenance Collection? Meet Petit Verdot—a wine with a fascinating story and magnetic charm, waiting to be explored.
What Makes Petit Verdot Unique?
You might know the Provenance classics; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, and Carménère. Wines with loyal followings and plenty of personality. But Petit Verdot? It’s the quietly confident member of the family. Often used as a blending grape in Bordeaux, it's rare to see Petit Verdot go it alone. But we’re letting it shine solo, so you can savour every nuance of this expressive varietal.
What’s in a Name?
Petit Verdot (pronounced peh-TEE vehr-DOH) means “little green one”—a nod to how slowly it ripens in the French climate. But in Australia, particularly in Queensland’s high-altitude Granite Belt, the grape is in its element.
With sun-drenched days, granite-rich soils, and crisp nights, our Petit Verdot ripens beautifully, revealing its best traits: Deep colour, expressive flavour, balanced acidity, and elegant structure.
Tasting Notes: A Sensory Experience

Our 2024 Provenance Petit Verdot is bold, bright, and vibrant. On the nose, you’ll find plum, lilac, dried sage, cacao, and just a whisper of soft green herbs. Take a sip and it unfurls beautifully: blueberries, black plum, and black cherry, with a deep, earthy finish that lingers on the palate.
Despite its richness, this is a medium to full bodied wine—structured and complex, yet totally approachable.
Food Pairings

Rich and bold, Petit Verdot shines alongside equally flavourful dishes. Think smoky, herb-crusted lamb cutlets, chargrilled cauliflower with its deep, nutty sweetness, or sticky Chinese pork belly that balances savoury richness with a hint of caramelised spice. Each bite brings out new layers in the wine’s intensity and depth.
Winemaking & Oak
After harvest, our 2024 Provenance Petit Verdot was aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak barriques, adding finesse without overshadowing the fruit’s natural vibrancy. The result is a truly distinctive Australian expression; modern in its confidence, yet respectful of its Old World roots.
Why Try Petit Verdot?
For the Adventurous Palate
If you love the structure of Cabernet or the richness of Shiraz, Petit Verdot offers something different—herbal, floral, deeply fruited, and deliciously unexpected.
For Food Lovers
Its acidity and fine tannins make it an excellent partner for bold, flavour-packed dishes. Each bite becomes more memorable when matched with a glass of this expressive red.
For the Patient Collector
With the right cellaring, Petit Verdot evolves beautifully. Enjoy it now, or let it mature for up to a decade—it has the structure and depth to go the distance.
