Vino Spotlight: Nero d'Avola

Today, we're popping the cork on a hidden gem from the sun-soaked vineyards of Sicily – Nero d'Avola. It's time to embark on a vinous journey that combines history, flavour explosions, and the perfect excuse to upgrade your dinner game.

Here at Witches Falls, we've just unveiled our 2022 Wild Ferment Nero d'Avola. Let us spill the beans on why this variety is simply a must-try.

A Sip Back in Time

First things first, let's take a stroll down the cobblestone paths of history. Literally translated, “Nero d’Avola” means “the black grape of Avola”— a nod to its hometown in Sicily. Nero d'Avola, our main character, has been gracing Sicilian vineyards for centuries. It's believed this captivating grape variety first arrived on the island with the Greeks over 2000 years ago. Yet, the first account of this grape was in the 1500s, when it was known as Calabrese.

In 1998, grapevine cuttings were approved for use in Australia and were initially imported by Chalmers Family Nursery. However, it wasn't until 2001 that the vines were released from quarantine for cultivation. Some years later, our grower, Ashley Ratcliff, acquired some of these vines to plant and nurture at his Riverland vineyard.

Fast forward to today, and over 55 vineyards across Australia are smitten by Nero's charms. It's practically the James Bond of grapes – suave, mysterious, and with a backstory that could fill volumes.

What to Expect When You're Expecting Nero

Now, let's talk taste. Nero d'Avola doesn't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Some Italian versions strut around with the swagger of a tannic, full-bodied Shiraz, while the Aussies opt for a softer, plummier vibe. It's like choosing between a power suit and your favourite pair of sweatpants—Nero's got options.

Expect a red wine that's like a well-layered novel—juicy, fruit-forward, and easy-drinking. From minty freshness to cocoa richness, Nero's aromatic notes are like a surprise party for your taste buds. Intrigued? You should be.
